Take Advantage of A City Swimming Pool

By Jordan Glenn

As we move closer to summer, gaining access to a pool in Manhattan is a premium amenity for the apartment dweller. This becomes more apparent in the summer, as there is a tremendous increase in the options for using one. If you exercise regularly in local gym or run in the park, consider giving body a break. Trade in your sneakers for a swim suit and do some lap swimming this summer.

There are several options available when looking for a pool. Some of them are very inexpensive. Throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and the Bronx, you'll find city run pools. The NYC website has a list of pool locations and hours. Another option might be the gym in your neighborhood. Summer memberships are often available, which will allow you to use both the gym and pool. Most gyms offer this type of membership to students home from school, but sometimes they extend it to include a wider audience. Additionally, you might find an apartment building offering pool memberships. Finally, if you travel to a weekend vacation home or Hamptons share house, you may have a pool right outside your back porch.

Substituting a pool workout for a gym workout can have many benefits. Many in the fitness crowd know that swimming provides a great workout. However, it's more than just a cardiovascular alternative to running or the stair master. Swimming is a total body exercise. Swimming provides your muscles with strength-training and flexibility components, as well helping to improve one's range of motion. Incorporate a variety of strokes into your workout to allow for the use of different muscle groups while you thrust your body through the water with your arms and legs. Seek the advice of a personal trainer Manhattan with an aquatics background, if necessary. One additional benefit of giving your body a break from weights, running or cycling is the reduction of the constant pounding and impact on your joints. The rest period can stave off an injury or chronic pain later on.

Mentally, the pool can pay long-term dividends, as well. Everyone needs a mental break now and then. Swimming can be just that. For instance, if you exercise four to five times per week 52 weeks per year, going to the same gym every time can become tiresome. The swimming pool can provide you with a wonderful change of atmosphere. Then when summer is over, you'll see your gym day with a fresh perspective. Plus, jumping in the pool is refreshing. It can help wash the stress of the day away.

In short, don't just think about it, do it. Your body and mind could use some refreshment. Get motivated by consulting with one of the many skilled personal training Manhattan experts that have aquatics exercise backgrounds. Come on in, the water's great!
